THE Heart Institute of the Caribbean (HIC) has announced they will be carrying over last year’s donation of $5 million worth of cardiac screening services to high school athletes who participated in the Wesley Powell/HIC Track and Field Meet held at Excelsior High School last Saturday.
Gizelle Riley, HIC marketing administrative associate, made the announcement at last week’s 14th staging of the meet.
She said as title sponsor for the third consecutive year, her organisation is proud to be associated with the track meet and a related workshop dubbed Healthy Hearts and How To Know Your Heart is Healthy held the day before the track meet.
“The objective was to educate student-athletes, as well as coaches and parents on cardiovascular issues in an effort to urge them to take the necessary precautions in preparing for the upcoming event and other future athletic activities,” Riley said.
She said given Jamaica’s rich culture in track and field athletics, coupled with the recent unfortunate incidents featured in the media regarding young athletes, HIC hopes that carrying over this donation will aid in contributing to the identification of possible cardiac issues.
