THE 14th staging of the annual Wesley Powell Heart Institute of the Caribbean Track and Field Meet is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Courtney Walsh Oval at Excelsior High School beginning at 8:30 am.
Started in 1998, the meet is being staged to honour the memory of the late founder of Excelsior High School Dr Aston Wesley Powell, who was also a past principal of the school. This meet is also the first of the 2016/2017 track and field season on the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association calendar.
The press launch was held at the Excelsior High School Auditorium yesterday, at which Clyde Jureidini, deputy chairman of the organising committee, outlined details of the meet including the events to be contested along with four classes for high school boys and girls, open, colleges, institutions and clubs.
Jureidini said the meet has grown from 21 schools and 700 athletes to 53 teams and is expected to have nearly 2,000 participating athletes this year. The top three finishers in each event in every class will receive an award.
“Over the years the meet has contributed to the development of many of Jamaica’s athletes, including Olympians Asafa Powell, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Melaine Walker, and Megan Simmonds, and many others to name a few,” Jureidini said.
